And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt.
It is not the dead who praise the LORD, nor any who descend into silence.
before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
For there is no mention of You in death; who can praise You from Sheol?
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?”
No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the Son of Man.
The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground; on that very day his plans perish.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ the firstfruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him.
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.
Therefore we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
All go to one place; all come from dust, and all return to dust.
And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
“Go away,” He told them. “The girl is not dead, but asleep.” And they laughed at Him.
Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection! The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with Him for a thousand years.
After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
“What does he look like?” asked Saul. “An old man is coming up,” she replied. “And he is wearing a robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed facedown in reverence. Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.” They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus. And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Abijah reigned in his place.
So in the forty-first year of his reign, Asa died and rested with his fathers.
And Jotham rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Ahaz reigned in his place.
And Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son Manasseh reigned in his place.
And Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David. And his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. So while we are in this tent, we groan under our burdens, because we do not wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that our mortality may be swallowed up by life. And God has prepared us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a pledge of what is to come. . . .
And Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David, and his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.
And Jehoiakim rested with his fathers, and his son Jehoiachin reigned in his place.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor. And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side. . . .
the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of Death and of Hades.
But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith. In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. For we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. . . .
When Hadad heard in Egypt that David had rested with his fathers and that Joab, the commander of the army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”
And the length of Jeroboam’s reign was twenty-two years, and he rested with his fathers, and his son Nadab reigned in his place.

He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.
And Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried at his palace. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
And Jehoash rested with his fathers, and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
And Jehoahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And his son Jehoash reigned in his place.
And Jehoash rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And his son Jeroboam reigned in his place.
And Jeroboam rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. And his son Zechariah reigned in his place.
And Azariah rested with his fathers and was buried near them in the City of David. And his son Jotham reigned in his place.

And Jehoram rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David. And his son Ahaziah reigned in his place.
Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray. And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white. Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus. They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him. . . .
I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed.
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
“Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?”

Azariah was the one who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after King Amaziah rested with his fathers.

And Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried in his palace garden, the garden of Uzza. And his son Amon reigned in his place.
because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.
For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand
Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection. We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time. He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.
But there is a spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.
After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.
For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them deep into hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay.
as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils,
This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here.
The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds.
But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”
“Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done.
This is the burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel. Thus declares the LORD, who stretches out the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth, who forms the spirit of man within him:
For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of my body,
The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
